Site-C Dam

Foundations for Site-C – 500 kV Transmission Line Project in British Columbia
Client: BC Hydro

Project Overview

The project involved 75km of parallel lattice steel 500kV transmission line, spanning from the new Site-C Dam to the Peace Canyon Dam station, which included 3689 helical piles.  The pile design required the installation of double-galvanized helical piles installed at both tower hub and anchor locations. The scope of the foundations work included the design, manufacturing, installation, cutting, capping, and proof testing of all helical piles.

The work was completed successfully between November 2018 and January 2021.

“HPS participated in schedule meetings and supported coordination between the two groups that would ultimately allow our other construction activities to continue uninterrupted. The team at HPS was instrumental in meeting the in-service date for the most time sensitive component of this powerline project – the completion of BC Hydro’s 5L005.”

Pile Design

HPS presented a helical pile design solution to replace the existing foundation design. Our Helical pile design offered a more efficient foundation installation with minimal ground disturbance.

HPS and the Prime Contractor designed an optimized double galvanized pile which met BC Hydro’s design life criteria, while also meeting their tower design criteria.  HPS also performed additional testing to verify the design in all soil conditions.

Design specifics included:

  • 7, 8, 10, 12” round piles with a side wall thickness of 0.5” and an average length of 30’.
  • Piles were manufactured with 2 to 3 duck-billed helices (per pile)
  • Foundation hubs & anchor caps were also manufactured in house.
  • After manufacturing, materials were transported to a 3rd party for double galvanizing

Pile Installation

Our work was completed on time and to BC Hydro and the Prime Contractor satisfaction. Even with project delays, unseasonal temperatures, and difficult access requirements, HPS was able to exceed schedule requirements.

  • Length: 150 km of 500 kV Transmission Line
  • Number of structures: 393
  • Number of Piles: 3523 + 166 extensions
